Choosing a coding bootcamp was already hard. AI made it harder — because the right curriculum changed faster than most schools did. Plenty of programs still teach a pre-2023 syllabus with a hasty “AI module” bolted on the end; a graduate of that syllabus walks into interviews trained for a job that no longer exists.
Here are seven questions that separate a bootcamp built for this era from one that isn’t. Ask them of any school — including us.
1. Is AI woven through the curriculum, or bolted on?
If AI appears as a single late-stage module, that’s a bolt-on. In real work, AI coding agents are involved from the first week of any project. Look for programs where every project uses the AI-native method — specs, context engineering, review, verification — as the default working style, not a special topic.
2. Do they teach verification, not just generation?
Anyone can generate code with AI. The employable skill is knowing whether that code is right — reading it critically, testing it, catching failure modes. If a program’s AI content is “how to get code out of a chatbot” without an equal weight on review and verification, it’s teaching the easy half.
3. Do they name the actual methods?
The discipline has a vocabulary now: spec-driven development, context engineering, the agent loop, evals. A school that can’t name what it teaches probably hasn’t systematised it. (What these terms mean: our explainer on AI-native engineering.)
4. Live cohorts or a video library?
Completion rates for self-paced video courses are notoriously dismal. Cohorts — real classes, real deadlines, a group that notices when you go quiet — are the single strongest predictor of actually finishing. Ask what happens live and what’s pre-recorded.
5. What do graduates leave with?
The honest answer should be deployed work: real applications in production, a GitHub history that survives technical scrutiny, and a portfolio story a graduate can defend in an interview. A certificate is not an outcome.
6. Are the outcome claims honest?
Be wary of guaranteed-job promises. A trustworthy school talks about placement support — introductions, interview preparation, portfolio reviews — and is upfront that outcomes also depend on your effort. Check whether their refund and deferral policy is published before you pay anything.
7. Does the payment process protect you?
You should be able to apply, talk to a human, and understand exactly what you’re paying for before money moves. Prices should be stated (even if indicative), with deposits and installment terms in writing.
